At the University of Mount Union, we are committed to providing our students with an education that equals success. Generations of Mount Union students have benefited from the philanthropic efforts of thoughtful and loyal supporters. We would not be the respected institution of higher learning that we are today had our predecessors not had the vision to move the University forward.

As Mount Union has progressed during the last several decades, careful planning and generous support have put the University in an enviable position amongst its peers. Mount Union is honored to be recognized among the best comprehensive colleges in the region. The combination of quality academic programs grounded in the liberal arts and opportunities for experiential learning outside the classroom make Mount Union stand out as a top choice for students and their families. It is important to celebrate our successes, but it is more important to continue to look to the future.

The University is taking proactive and strategic steps to remain competitive and relevant while also meeting the ever-changing needs of our students and society as a whole. We take great pride in the value of the Mount Union experience while remaining committed to making our high-quality education accessible to students of all financial backgrounds.

The profound impact philanthropy has on Mount Union can be seen across campus in our state-of-the-art facilities, the energy in the classroom as professors share their expertise with eager students, and the excited smile of each new graduate as they embark upon a life filled with meaningful work and responsible citizenship.

On behalf of Mount Union's students, faculty, and staff, we are deeply grateful to everyone who chooses to make a gift of financial support.

Meet Lynn and Susan, Proud Purple Raider Fans

Lynn Sontum ’64 was teaching high school physics when he met his wife, Susan, a student teacher at his school. “My host teacher told me that Lynn was the most eligible bachelor in the school”, Susan laughed, “and the rest is history!”

But Lynn and Susan’s love of education extends well beyond their years of teaching. Their passion for education has also kept them closely connected to Mount Union, Lynn’s alma mater. He noted how well his time at Mount prepared him for his career. A physics and education major, he also played on the tennis team and was a brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He described his experience saying, “It was always easy to find your professors if you had a question, and the student body was so welcoming. The community was what made all the difference.

The Sontums ventured back to campus occasionally in the early years, but it was one of Lynn’s college roommates who started inviting them to football games a little more than two decades ago. “At first, we would come to one or two games a year,” they explained. “Eventually, we got our own season tickets. And now, we never miss a home game. We’ve even enjoyed numerous trips to Salem, VA for the Stagg Bowl. We love our Purple Raiders!”

Just as eager as they are to cheer on the team, Lynn and Susan are also passionate about helping make a Mount Union educational experience possible for students of all backgrounds. “I started making gifts to The Mount Union Fund of $5 or $10 back in the 60s,” Lynn shared. “I didn’t have a lot, but Susan and I have always believed in paying it forward to the next generation.”

Today, the Sontums support The Mount Union Fund and other areas on campus through gifts from their IRAs. “We decided to use some of the money we have to withdraw, by law, when we turned 70 ½ to fund our gifts.” Lynn added, “By rolling the funds over directly from our IRAs, we don’t have to declare them as income, and, therefore, don’t have to pay taxes on them. By giving via the IRA charitable rollover option, we can make an even bigger impact on Mount Union students. It really makes giving easy.
